Tomb for the Karmelić Family
- this tomb made of white Brač stone is a perfect blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern stone design. Its execution highlights the purity of lines and precision of form, while the simplicity of the structure creates a sense of peace and permanence. The tomb is defined by flat stone surfaces and rich profiles, with a few gently curved edges that soften the geometry and add a touch of elegance. The finely bush-hammered surface gives the stone a natural appearance and a soft play of light. The most distinctive feature is the headstone with a stone cross, composed of two separate stone blocks. The first part forms a negative cross, carved within the surface, while the second is slightly raised and finely polished, creating a powerful contrast of light and shadow. This interplay of solid and void symbolises faith, transience, and eternity. Another striking detail is the engraving panel, which ends irregularly, as if the stone had naturally broken off rather than being machine-cut. That area is roughly bush-hammered, further emphasising the authenticity of the stone. The contrast between smooth and rough textures adds depth and visual rhythm to the design. At the front, a turned stone vase provides perfect compositional balance. This tomb of pure lines and precise workmanship, designed by Dražen Jakšić, demonstrates how stonemasonry and design are deeply connected – every edge, cut, and surface is conceived to leave a lasting trace of craftsmanship and respect for life.
